Small Business Azure

cloud computing

The Azure Cloud: Is it ideal for small businesses?

Assessing the cost and benefits of small businesses switching to the cloud.

The cloud can seem like a huge investment, especially when factoring in the migration of data to another platform. But what small businesses are realizing more and more is that working in the cloud and using SaaS online applications is a huge money-saver. Businesses plan to increase usage of SaaS over the coming years rather than decrease, simply because online has become the new way to cut costs.

Small businesses in particular benefit from the significant reduction of administrative and energy costs. Rather than dealing with servers and a development environment that can lag and can have a hindering number of down-times, the Azure Cloud offers over a 99.9% up-time guarantee. Many enterprise businesses cannot even boast such a level of up-time.

Not having to manage server up-time or updates/upgrades saves on the hassle and the wallet. The pricing of Azure is also competitive to contender Amazon EC2 cloud computing.

Windows Azure:

  • Compute = $0.12 / hour
  • Storage = $0.15 / GB stored / month
  • Storage Transactions = $0.01 / 10K
  • Bandwidth = $0.10 in / $0.15 out / GB

SQL Azure:

  • Web Edition – Up to 1 GB relational database = $9.99 / month
  • Business Edition – Up to 10 GB relational database = $99.99 / month
  • Bandwidth = $0.10 in / $0.15 out / GB
Business Edition DB includes:

  • Up to 10 GB of T-SQL based relational database
  • Self-managed DB, auto high availability
  • Additional features in the future like auto-partition, CLR, fanouts etc.
  • Best suited for ISVs packaged LOB apps, Department custom apps

.Net Services:

  • Messages = $0.15/100K message operations , including Service Bus messages and Access Control tokens
  • Bandwidth = $0.10 in / $0.15 out / GB

What Online Services are Available in the Cloud?

Microsoft Online Services offer a wealth of business productivity suites that can cut costs and increase revenue for businesses. BPOS is a popular SaaS that allows businesses to leverage SharePoint, Exchange Server 2007, Live Meeting, and Office Communications Server, all packaged together for one monthly fee of $15 per user, per month.
